How we check our guides
We're home bakers, not a test kitchen. This page sets out exactly what that means for what you read here.
Where our advice comes from
Every article ends with a How we wrote this box that separates three things:
- Our own experience. What we've done in our own kitchen in Timaru. When a page includes our real bakes, the photos are marked From our kitchen.
- Established baking practice. Standard methods that are widely used and described by home and professional bakers (bulk fermentation, the poke test, baker's percentages and so on). Our Proven method label means "based on standard, widely used baker's methods", not that we ran a formal test.
- External sources. Where a claim depends on research or an authority, especially anything about health, we link the source.
What we don't do
- We don't claim lab tests, side-by-side bake-offs or measurements we haven't made.
- We don't invent statistics, reader numbers or reviews.
- We don't give medical or dietary advice.
Products and affiliate links
Gear pages explain what matters when choosing, then list options worth considering. They're not hands-on tested by us unless a page says otherwise, and they aren't ranked. Some links may earn a commission; that never decides what we include. See our affiliate disclosure.
Images
Photos marked From our kitchen are real photos of our own bakes. Some other illustrative images are generated rather than photographed, and our diagrams are drawn to explain an idea, not to show a real loaf.
